eTrex 10

eTrex 10 retains the core functionality, rugged construction, affordability and long battery life that made eTrex the most dependable GPS device available. We improved the user interface and added a worldwide basemap, paperless geocaching and support for spine-mounting accessories.

Rugged Handheld GPS with Enhanced Capabilities.

  • Worldwide basemap
  • 2.2" monochrome display, easy to read in any light
  • GPS and GLONASS satellites for faster positioning
  • Paperless geocaching
  • 25-hour battery life with 2 AA batteries

eTrex

Find Fun

eTrex supports geocaching GPX files for downloading geocaches and details straight to your unit. eTrex stores and displays key information, including location, terrain, difficulty, hints and descriptions, which means no more manually entering coordinates and paper printouts.

Keep Your Fix

With its high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver and HotFix satellite prediction, eTrex locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons.

Go Global

The eTrex series is the first-ever consumer-grade receivers that can track both GPS and GLONASS satellites simultaneously. When using GLONASS satellites, a system developed by the Russian Federation, the time it takes for the receiver to 'lock on' to a position is (on average) approximately 20 percent faster than using GPS.

Plan Your Next Trip

  • Take charge of your next adventure with BaseCamp, software that lets you view and organize maps, waypoints, routes, and tracks
  • This free trip-planning software even allows you to create Garmin Adventures that you can share with friends, family or fellow explorers.
  • BaseCamp displays topographic map data in 2-D or 3-D on your computer screen, including contour lines and elevation profiles. It also can transfer an unlimited amount of satellite images to your device when paired with a BirdsEye Satellite Imagery subscription.

Simple unit for those of us who only need the basics

I''m also not looking to spend a lot on helping to prevent that situation again, so I did a quick search and came up with this unit. It doesn''t do a lot and I don''t need it to. Mark the camp, go for a hike, peace of mind that camp is "over there". See something cool, mark that too, find that cool thing again in the future.
It does other things, mimics my trail, but I haven''t fully played around with everything. I only care about that one thing and it does that one thing well.

I have used this across the United States for a little over a year. First off, I would say it would be completely irresponsible to try to navigate only using this device on its own. I carry this as a supplement to a paper map. I mainly use it to for its trip computer capabilities, in that it tells me my speed and distance traveled which is valuable in predicting timing of arrival and helps with navigating via map. I use the waypoint function as a back-tracking route in case of emergency but thankfully I haven''t actually had to backtrack out.

I think Garmin is a company that does not support their customers after the purchase. I read a lot of reviews before purchasing and people all over the web can''t seem to figure this GPS out. The user manual you receive with it, tells you how to put batteries in it but provides no in-depth description of the functions provided by the device.

While this is supposed to be an entry level GPS, I think most entry level customers will find it confusing and not helpful on the trail. I will continue to carry it until it breaks, but I am not that impressed and knowing what it provides I wouldn''t recommend it unless you just plan to use the trip computer and some primitive waypoint features. At its current price, I just don''t see any really value in what it provides. I certainly won''t be in the market for another Garmin product for a while.

Really love this for outdoor activities!
How I most often use it: after the initial setup when I arrive at the trailhead/parking lot (or the bike path etc) I turn it on, clear current track, reset the trip odometer, then add a waypoint and that''s it. Since I have it set to automatically record tracks there''s nothing for me to do until I get to the end of the trail. At which point I then save the track and then use the backtrack feature to guide me back to the car/trail head.

This comes with a *very very* basic world map with only major cities (Los Angeles, San Diego etc) as landmarks so don''t expect street names or shops, banks, gas stations, restaurants etc. But great for backpacking, hiking, biking and even as a backup for wheeling/offroading (though I use a tablet based GPS for that).

This device (the eTrex 10) is a gem. Thus the five star rating. I''ve been studying it and using it on bicycle rides for the past two months. I''ve read several of the Amazon reviews for this product, and few do a good job of informing the consumer. I think this is because the product caters to so many different endusers: boaters, kayakers, walkers, hikers, off-road cyclists, and on-road cyclists. My review is written from the perspective of an on-road cyclist. And I''m not going to write a review as much as merely answer a series of questions.

1. Can you charge this device using a USB cable? >>No. The device uses two AA batteries for power. They can be cheap alkaline, or the more expensive rechargeable NiMH or lithium. Alkaline work ok if the weather is warm or hot. If you go the rechargeable route, don''t buy cheap ones that have less than 2000 capacity. I didn''t know rechargeables came in different capacities. Duh! The rechargeable batteries you need to recharge in a separate recharging device.
2. What do you use the USB cable for that comes with the device? >>To connect your device to your PC or Mac so you can update software or move GPX files on or off the device. GPX files are what tracks and waypoints are stored in. I use a Web site called RidewithGPS to create my TCX files. Then I use other software to convert them to GPX files. Think GpsVisualizer dotcom.
3. Can you load maps into this device? >>Not really. There is an almost nonexistent base map that comes with the unit. It is supposedly possible to overwrite it with a different map. However, for you to add maps to this device you would need to be able to insert an SD card which is where you would store extra maps. Since you cannot install an SD card into this device, you cannot add maps.
4. Can you use this device on long bike rides so you don''t get lost? Is it good for bicycle touring? >>Yes. This is why I purchased this device.
5. Can this device aid one in navigating a city walk? An outdoors hike? An off-road bicycle ride? An on-road bicycle ride? Yes to all four questions. I use the device for GPX files I create using a free online service called RidewithGPS dotcom. The GPX files are the end-product of designing a route. Some of the routes are through city streets. Some are through trails in the various outdoor parks near my home. Some are mountain bike trails. And some are 200k brevet rides on roads. I copy the GPX files into the GPX folder in my device and I''m ready to go.
6. Can an SD card be installed into this device? >>No. Not on THIS device. Pay a little more to get the eTrex 20x or the eTrex 30x and you will be able to install an SD card in those devices.
7. Is it easy to read this device in sunlight? At nighttime? >> Yes. Yes. I have found it easy in both daytime and nighttime. Of course, I have to wear glasses that correct my vision well. The viewing screen is somewhat small.
8. Is this device good for long distance bike rides like brevets? >>Yes. GPS navigational devices designed for cyclists typically have internal rechargeable batteries that will die after 10 to 12 hours of constant use. Since the eTrex 10 uses two AA batteries, when they die they are easily replaced while riding the bike. As long as you have extra AA batteries along during your rides you will never be without a functioning eTrex 10.
9. How long does it take to find satellites before it starts working? >>Depends. It always cranks up quickly (within a minute) for me. However, I have both kinds of satellites enabled in my system setup. Uses more power this way though.
10. Is the user manual instructive? >>It is OK. The problem with the manual is the uses the device can be put to are so broad: boating, walking, hiking, biking off-road, and biking on-road. There really should be a manual for each type of user – and there just isn''t. Furthermore, do you want to use the device to mark geocaches? To merely be a navigation tool? Or to record where you have gone so you can retrace your steps? I''m really only interested in using the device as a navigation tool.
11. Does this device track pace and distance traveled? Can it double as a bike speedometer? >>Yes. Yes. You can configure the view screen to tell you how far you have traveled at any point in time. And you can configure it to tell you how fast you are going in mph or kph.
12. How relevant are street signs when using this device? >>Street signs are not really relevant because maps are not really relevant. With this device and your GPX file you will have a track (breadcrumb trail) and waypoints (usually along the trail). I create my GPX file so the names of the waypoints are street names. When the device is functioning a cursor shows up in the view screen indicating where I''m actually planted on the earth. As it moves along the track and I approach a waypoint I know it''ll be time to make a turn. I can make the turn without even knowing the name of the street. And when riding in the middle of the night I rarely look for street signs to verify a turn. Of course, it is nice to see a street sign that matches the waypoint title. Waypoint titles show up in my view screen as I ride.
13. Does the view screen easily scratch? >>Yes. This is a problem. Invest in a $10 screen saver.
14. Does this device provide turn-by-turn instruction when being used? >>No. You only get turn-by-turn instructions when a GPS device uses an installed map to "calculate" your route. This device doesn''t even have a map. But the eTrex 20x and eTrex 30x models do have maps. However, those units don''t use the maps to calculate routes. The maps are just background images to the tracks and waypoints that appear on the respective view screens. All three units allow you to create proximity warnings around your waypoints. And when you get within a certain proximity of a waypoint you can be warned. This function works kind of like turn-by-turn instructions. Unfortunately, I have found them not to be too helpful. They tend to clutter up my view screen.
15. Can you insert a pre-loaded route? >>Yes. See answer to Q12.
16. What kind of battery life can one expect? >>With two rechargeable NiMH AA batteries with capacity of 2600 each you''ll probably get more than 20 hours. This has been my experience while having both types of satellites accessed and leaving the backlight on constantly.
17. Does this device have touchscreen features? >>No. If it did you wouldn''t get 20 hours of battery life. See answer to Q16.
18. What memory does this unit have? >>Only internal. This device does not let you install SD cards. The eTrex 20x and eTrex 30x does allow for SD cards. Those units cost more.
19. What kind of batteries does this device use? >>AA batteries. See answer to Q1.
20. When the batteries die do you lose your current track and any waypoints? >>Nope. This is because information is saved as you go along, and the route is not “calculated” during your ride. The track is static information, as are the waypoints. When you turn the device back on after changing the batteries the cursor in your view screen shows your current location just like when the power went out.
21. What file formats does this device read? >>Only GPX files, which are XML text files with a .gpx extension. Won''t read TCX or FIT file formats. To create GPX files I download my routes from Ridewithpgs and then use one of a few free online converting Web sites to convert the TCX file to a GPX format file.
22. Does this device have an audio component? >>Nope. If it did, then you wouldn''t get 20 hours of battery life. However, pay a little more and get the eTrex 20x or eTrex 30x and you will have some audio capability. For example, the proximity alarm in the eTrex 10 will not produce any bells or beeps, but the other two units do.
23. Does this device have a mapping function? >>It will record where you have gone if you want it to. Save the file when you are done, and you can upload it to RWGPS, Garmin Connect, Strava, or MapMyRide.

First off, this is an old model. Possibly obsolete. You cannot expand the memory or add much to the unit. It doesn''t have a magnetic compass, it relies on GPS to find your heading. It is a monochromatic screen. The base map is very much basic. The ETrex 20 would be your next stop if you require anything greater than any of these. With that said, this unit is quick, fairly accurate, compact, and fairly durable. The screen is reportedly easy to scratch, so invest in a $7 pack of screen protectors for it. The UI is easy to familiarize yourself with and change, and it does whatever your basic handheld GPS does. It runs on two AA batteries and lasts a fairly decent amount of time. If all you need is something to give you coordinates, this is probably your most cost effective option. Besides using your GPS enabled cell phone.

When a product that I use for navigation for research tells me that it''s accuracy is 3 meters, I expect that multiple brand new devices would not say that a location is 25 meters away from the same location in the other brand new unit. Also spent many frustrating hours trying to locate a position in the woods, the unit would say I''m 6 meters away, I would get there and be 18 meters away, etc., all while telling me the accuracy is 3 m or 4 m. Bull! I think it''s a ploy to trick consumers into thinking the unit has great accuracy but it''s a total lie. Granted I was working in the forest, but I doubt that''s uncommon for users of this product. If the accuracy is really 12 m or 16 m I can live with it, just don''t tell me it''s 3 meters when it''s not!!!

Amazing little device. Years ago I had an early version of this so the new features and joystick are great additions to me. I mainly use this to track my windsurfing. I hang it around my neck and off I go. I''m mainly curious about my speed and overall distance during an afternoon of windsurfing which this easily keeps track of an more... top speed so far is 31.4 mph and distance one afternoon was 26 miles - enough to sail over to Catalina Island, something I think would be fun to do with the right wind.
Once connected to my computer I can bring the gpx file from the eTrex into Google Earth and there are my tracks, detailed speed info, detailed elevation info, distance traveled, waypoints and more. You can see exactly how fast you were going throughout the entire track so in my case I''m trying to come out of my gybes as fast as possible and I can see all of it. There are other apps available that can do this but I haven''t tried them.
The one drawback - no lanyard. It was easy to add one so no big deal.

I just tried to take this thing for a hike, brought the instructions and had a terrible time. All I want is something that will show where I''m walking and how to get back. The instructions are probably the most vague I''ve seen. It''s like they expect you to know how the thing works before you''ve ever used it. I couldn''t figure out how to do anything on it really. Oh and it comes with like ten little quick start guides in various languages and none of them give you a good idea of what to do. I guess I''m looking for something a little more user friendly and less complicated. There''s like 25 little apps on the home screen and I couldn''t really tell what any of them do. The "map" app just showed a map of the United States with a couple major cities indicated. Finally I figured out that pressing the down arrow on the left side zooms in to the map. Anyway, I''m sure I would have figured it out if I had stuck with it, but I found the instructions so aggravating that I just had to send it back. I gave it two stars instead of one as to not be overly dramatic.

Soweit so gut.
Soweit so gut.

This little device is a treasure to me. I enjoy venturing off the beaten path, far from the madding crowd, and in such places, where missing a logging road on the return trip could literally cost you your life, this small, easy to use GPS has tamed the Canadian wilderness I love to explore. I consider myself fairly proficient at map and compass, but there are areas I would not consider exploring with compass only. Imagine a wilderness area where you have absolutely no chance of seeing another human being, where you cannot hear a passing car or airplane, or see ambient light at night from a nearby town. Imagine being several miles deep in thick forest and needing to hit an exact location on the way out. This GPS does that for me. It''s awesome and gives you a sense of security I have never before felt in woods exploration. I use it regularly and really enjoy it.
